Homestay in Thanh Hoa
Homestay is a kind of travel that brings travellers experiences of the normal life of the locals, chances to explore the culture,… Therefore, it is very popular in travellers’ community. Nowadays, homestay service in Vietnam is getting developed to serve tourist on package holiday to Vietnam.
The western land of Thanh Hoa is considered as “an attractive paradised not explored” with homestay. Nature gives it many beautiful scenes, majestic caves, terraced fields turning yellow in harvest, houses on stilts staying behind high mountains, with the sound of streams, and falls, and the songs of “khap Thai”, “Xuong”,… Arriving in the western land of Thanh Hoa means coming Pu Hu nature reverse, Pu Luong (Quan Hoa, Ba Thuoc), coming Co Lung, Son Ba Muoi (Ba Thuoc), Cam Luong fish stream,… It is not only various of creatures but also primitive, and majestic with mountains, and caves. Travellers will be attracted by traditional dishes such as: bam-boo tube rice, special soups, fried meat, wine drunk out of a jar through pipes. Travellers can watch the dance of Thai people, Muong people. Besides, it is a chance to explore the cultural background of 7 peoples here: Thai, Muong, Mong, Kho Mu, Tho, Dao, Kinh. It is an unforgettable experience to approach to the special customs, and festivals of the locals.
In fact, homestay is no longer a strange definition to people in Pu Luong, Pu Hu, Cam Luong, Hang village (Phu Le, Quan Hoa), Ben En national park,… They are the most attractive sites in Thanh Hoa. However, this kind of travel is not cared about enough to develop. According some reports, although this pattern is spontaneously operated by the locals, it brings many effects, especially economic effects, such as eradicating hunger and alleviating poverty.
We had a chance to visit Mr.Luong Van Nguyet’s family at Hin village, Lung Cao, Son Ba Muoi (Ba Thuoc). It is one of the first ones who bring homestay to Thanh Hoa. He told that: “ Aware of the need of foreigners for exploring Pu Lung, and experiencing the normal life in the locals’ house, I decided to start this new pattern. Now, we have 4-year experience, and loyal guests.” Although the size of the pattern is not too big, with a fixed number of visiting travellers, Mr. Nguyet has a profit of 50 millions dong every year. Nowadays, many people have experience to do business with this kind of service.
In spite of those strengths, not everywhere can develop this kind of service. For example, Cam Luong tourist attraction. Mr. Pham Dang Khoa from Management Department of Cam Luong tourist attraction said: “10 years ago, I and some friends started homestay. In the beginning, it is very welcomed. At that time, not many travellers try homestay, but they love the atmosphere here, would like to participate in traditional festivals, try local specialities. However, noone continues keeping this kind of service now”. Even in Cao Son, only 3 families do business with this kind.
The reason for difficulties in development of homestay in Thanh Hoa is that: infrastructue is not good. The services are simple, and boring. The locals are not professional in welcoming travellers. It is lack of a management for each village. Government has not showed their role in developing travel. The source of travellers depends much on travel agencies. Many travel agencies care much about homestay. However, it doesn’t attract so many travellers, some agencies are unmarketable. Therefore, they are not interested in this kind of service. Thanh Hoa recently has had some policies to develop homestay such as 2182/QĐ-UBND on 07/07/2011. As a result, Thai people can invest in infrastructure to develop mountainous homestay. It is an important direction for homestay’s development.
According to Travel Association, homestay is very suitable for rural, or mountainous areas, or the areas of many ethnic minority. It is very attractive to foreigners. The factor making this kind become special is its unique characteristic, so it needs to be done research on carefully. It needs to be based on the cultural background of the locals, combined with protection of ethnic minority’s culture, as well as chances for businessmen to develop, and take advantages of homestay.
